Synopsis

TOKIO’s Masahiro Matsuoka will star in a new NTV drama series called “Yasuko to Kenji.” It is based on a comical manga by artist Aruko that was serialized in Bessatsu Margaret between April 2005 and November 2006.

The show focuses on a man named Kenji and his younger sister Yasuko, whose parents died in an accident 10 years earlier. Kenji was once the leader of a gang, but in order to support him and his sister, he began making a living as a shojo mangaka. His character normally wears glasses and appears to be a gentle guy, but he throws off his glasses and reverts to his violent side whenever he tries to protect Yasuko from danger. Part of the story follows Yasuko’s romance with an intelligent and good-looking man named Jun Tsubaki. Jun’s older sister Erika now runs a flower shop, but Erika was once a leader of a female gang, and she used to be in love with Kenji during those days.

Review

Based on renowned director Aoyama Shinji’s own novel, Sad Vacation is a slow-brewing, stylishly lensed meditation on loneliness, anger, and reconciliation. Like Aoyama’s previous films Eureka and Helpless, Sad Vacation is set in the southern city of Kitakyushu, exploring the light and dark sides of human nature through the lives of troubled marginal characters trying to escape from themselves. Aoyama teams up again with acclaimed actor Asano Tadanobu and NANA star Miyazaki Aoi, who previously starred in Helpless and Eureka, respectively. The film also co-stars actress Ishida Eri (Hibi) and popular actor Odagiri Joe (Tokyo Tower) in his first collaboration with Asano since 2003’s Bright Future.
Inspired to help others because of his own past, driver Kenji (Asano Tadanobu) takes in the orphaned son of an illegal Chinese migrant. Together with Yuri (Tsuji Kaori), the mentally troubled daughter of his late gangster friend, the three form an odd family of sorts. Also living in the same complex as Kenji are his co-workers Goro (Odagiri Joe), who is hiding from loan sharks, and Kozue (Miyazaki Aoi, in a seeming continuation of her character in Eureka), who is suffering from post-traumatic stress. One day, Kenji encounters his boss’s wife, Chiyoko (Ishida Eri), and realizes that she is actually the mother who abandoned him as a child. Chiyoko cheerily welcomes him back into her life and family as if nothing ever happened, but Kenji is not ready to forgive so easily.

Synopsis

The story begins with the deaths of ruling party’s Fukuoka legislator and his eldest son, his heir apparent, in an accident. It is decided that a by-election will be held, and Kanbayashi Masaichi, the leader of the ruling party, and secretary Miyama Rika conceive the idea of fielding the second son, Asakura Keita, who had been renounced by his father.

After Keita graduated from senior high school, he went on to a university in Nagano because he wanted to live in a place with beautiful stars, and eventually became an elementary school teacher over there. Well-liked by children and satisfied with his beloved star gazing, Keita has no interest in the world of politics. However, at Rika’s persuasion and the pressure of his family, he reluctantly decides to announce his candidacy.

Upon returning to Fukuoka, Keita is given a hearty welcome by supporters. The election strategist, Nirasawa Katsutoshi, arrives there. He is guided by the notion “election is the only permitted legal war” and begins Keita’s election campaign.
