Little DJ [J-Movie] (Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mayuko Fukuda, Ryoko Hirosue)

Director: Koto Nagata
Original Story by: Tadashi Onitsuka, Screenplay by: Uiko Miura / Koto Nagata,
Director of Photography: Jun Fukumoto, Lighting: Tokuju Ichikawa,
Production Designer: Noritaka Sasaki, Sound: Shinji Watanabe,
Film Editor: Tsuyoshi Imai, Music by: Naoki Sato
Ryunosuke Kamiki / Mayuko Fukuda / Ryoko Hirosue / Naomi Nishida
Lifted by a nostalgic medley of 1970s pop hits, Little DJ transports the audience back to a simpler era with a heart-tugging story of first love. Directed by Nagata Kotoe (Shibuya Maruyama Story) and based on Onizuka Tadashi’s popular same-titled novel, Little DJ is a gentle reminisce of love, loss, and music in the 1970s. Talented child actors Fukuda Mayuko (L Change the World) and Kamiki Ryunosuke (The Great Yokai War) star as the film’s doting adolescent leads, while Hirosue Ryoko (Bubble Fiction: Boom or Bust) plays the adult version of Fukuda’s character.
Radio producer Tamaki (Hirosue Ryoko) falls into a depressive slump when her late-night show gets cancelled. As she’s wallowing in unhappiness, an old song comes on over the radio, a song that brings her back to 1977 when she was 13 years old. That year she (Fukuda Mayuko) was injured in a car accident and ended up in the hospital, wrapped up like a mummy. There she befriends Taro (Kamiki Ryonosuke), one year younger and hospitalized for a blood disease. Fanatical about baseball and radio, Taro begins to DJ a music program over the hospital PA, and it becomes a big hit among the patients. First love blooms for Taro and Tamaki to the reassuring sounds of 70s J-pop, but how long can Taro keep spinning when time and illness are catching up?

Kabei Our Mother [J-drama] (Sayuri Yoshinaga, Tadanobu Asano, Mirai Shida)

Movie: Kabei - Our Mother | Kaabee | 母べえ
Release Date : January 28, 2008
Country : Japan
Director : Yoji Yamada
Starring : Sayuri Yoshinaga, Tadanobu Asano
Runtime : 133 min.

Competing at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival and one of the more highly anticipated films from Japan this year is Yoji Yamada’s “Kabei - Our Mother”. Yoji Yamada’s prolific career (even landing in the Guinness World Records for his Tora-san series) has seen a particular uptick in international recognition with his trilogy of Samurai films “Love and Honor,” “The Hidden Blade,” and “The Twilight Samurai.”

With his new film “Kabei - Our Mother” the movie is a distinct period piece set in the 1940s. Japan has seen a rebirth of sorts for period pieces set in the 40’s-60’s, thanks in large part to the popularity of the “Always - Sunset on Third Street” films. While “Always - Sunsent on Third Street” wallows in nostalgia and feel good moments from that era, “Kabei - Our Mother” will focus on the darker times of Tokyo during the 1940s. Yoji Yamada said this about his new film “You can say this film is a period drama, but in a sense, this is more so a historical investigation. The staff has been studying very hard. I would like to make this film with homage to all of the tender mothers who held her family tight in her thin but strong arms and lived through the hard times.”

The film’s distributor Shochiku describes the film as “Set in Tokyo in 1940, the peaceful life of the Nogami Family suddenly changes when the father, Shigeru, is arrested and accused of being a Communist. His wife Kayo works frantically from morning to night to maintain the household and bring up her two daughters with the support of Shigeru’s sister Hisako and Shigeru’s ex-student Yamazaki, but her husband does not return. WWII breaks out and casts dark shadows on the entire country, but Kayo still tries to keep her cheerful determination, and sustain the family with her love. This is an emotional drama of a mother and an eternal message for peace.”

The film stars Sayuri Yoshinaga and features a supporting cast of Tadanobu Asano, Miku Sato, Keiko Toda, and Shofukutei Tsurubei. “Kabei - Our Mother” will premiere in Japan on January 28 and play at the Berlin Film Festival (Feb. 7th - 17th).

Plot

Most male students head for the military barracks after finishing their first or second year in college, and many of them go through relationship troubles when they leave their girlfriends behind.

The film presents four different couples and depicts how they cope with the challenging period in a largely lighthearted fashion. The first couple is Won-jae (Jang Geun-seok), a college student who is officially in his early 20s but looks like a teenage boy, and his girlfriend Hyo-jeong (Son Tae-young), a physical therapist who is pushing 30. Apparently, their conflict revolves around their age gap, even when they remain apart due to Won-jae’s military service.

The second couple is in the same music band. Bo-ram (Jang Hee-jin), a shy keyboardist, has a crush on Min-cheol (Danny Ahn), a tall and handsome band leader who is showing affection to another female band member, even when he is in the military. The emotional tug-of-war between Bo-ram and Min-cheol is a little bit more convincing than other couples, thanks to Jang’s delicate performances throughout the film.

A very typical love triangle unfolds for the third couple: Jin-a (Yu In-young), who believes she’s the prettiest and cutest girl in the world, and her faithful boyfriend Eun-seok (Kim San-ho). When her boyfriend has begun his service, Jin-a sends him a nice gift package including what she calls “Love Candy,” but her devotion turns out to be not so solid when she feels lonely in the absence of her boyfriend and in the presence of his close friend (played by Lee Ki-woo).

But this is the fourth couple that goes to the extreme. Or the fourth girl, to be exact. Bi-ang (Han Yeo-reum) is living in her boyfriend’s house — Hur Wook (Woo Seung-min) — and she takes full advantage of his absence to seduce another man and even invites him to live with her.
