TOKYO (AP) — A U.S. serviceman has been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a Japanese woman, the latest in a series of criminal accusations sparking anger against American military bases in Japan.

James Littlejohn, a 22-year-old airman first class who belongs to the Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, was arrested Friday on charges of groping a 19-year-old woman in Hachinohe, said a spokesman from police in the city near Misawa. He spoke on condition of anonymity, citing policy.

Littlejohn allegedly hugged the woman from behind, then forcibly touched her breasts and buttocks, the police spokesman said.

He then fled in his car, but was taken into custody after police stopped his automobile based on a description from the woman.

The case is a fresh embarrassment to some 50,000 American troops stationed in Japan under a security pact, following higher-profile arrests earlier this year.

A 22-year-old Nigerian in the U.S. Navy was charged in April with fatally stabbing a taxi driver south of Tokyo. A U.S. Marine charged with raping a 14-year-old girl in southern Okinawa in February is to be court-martialed.

The rape and a series of other damaging criminal accusations against U.S. troops have inflamed long-simmering anger at the American military presence, which is blamed for crime, pollution and crowding.

Deputy Cmdr. Joel Malone of the Misawa Air Base attempted to smooth relations with officials in Hachinohe and Misawa following Littlejohn’s arrest.

“We take every incident such as this very seriously and we will cooperate with investigation,” he told Hachinohe Mayor Makoto Kobayashi in a partially televised visit. Kobayashi demanded the Air Force step up troop discipline.

The rape accusation prompted the U.S. military to severely restrict troop movements on Okinawa and elsewhere, and conduct a review of its anti-sexual assault education programs and guidelines.

Right, so Yokosuka has a higher crime rate than Port au Prince, Mogadishu or Cairo? Interesting.

And are you suggesting that the US military should withdraw from American territory?

By the way, the rate of violent crime in Japanese cities hosting U.S. military bases is the same as the average crime rate in Japan. I learned that in a college criminology course taught by a retired U.S. federal judge.

If so, then why does the Japanese government continue to request and rely upon US military protection?

The rate of violent crime in cities hosting U.S. military bases, including U.S. cities, are vastly greater than the crime rates in any other cities. I learned that in a college criminology course taught by a retired U.S. federal judge. He stated that servicemen were difficult to prosecute because investigations required cooperation between the local police and the military, making the investigations far more difficult.

In recent years the situation has worsened because the military and the courts have conspired to coerce young criminals to take military service as an option to conviction and jail time.

Recently, the U.S.M.C. has requested that they be allowed to recruit convicted felons while they are still in jail. Face it, the U.S. military is in the business of exporting crime.

Since you’re interested in the incidence of rape in Japan:

    “Chisa Fujioka | May 15, 2007

TOKYO (Reuters) - A man molests a young woman sitting next to him on a Japanese train, drags her to a restroom and rapes her while she sobs. Some 40 fellow passengers fail to intervene.”

    http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/articles/2007/05/15/little_sympathy_for_rape_victims_in_japan/

“Japan’s top government spokesman in 2003 was quoted as telling reporters in an off-the-record briefing that some women were asking to be raped by dressing provocatively — a remark that outraged many but failed to dent his political clout.”

RE: “I chose to post this because i’m interested in the repeated sexual offenses situation”

    - The rate of sexual offenses committed by US military personnel in Japan is lower than the rate of sexual offenses committed by Japanese men in Japan.

    - US military personnel found guilty of sexual assault are punished more severely than similar offenders under either the Japanese penal system or the US civil penal system. And much, much, much more severely than similar offenders in Western Europe or Canada. [e.g. 40 years in a US military jail versus 6 months"house arrest" in Canada]

But you’re free to continue spreading the sort of racist garbage that is common in the Japanese media. They especially love it when the alleged offenders are Black or Hispanic.

Same as when Chinese or Vietnamese etc rob convenience stores — all of a sudden it’s on the front page and there’s a “epidemic of foreign gangsterism!”

    From http://americaninjapan.blogspot.com/2005/03/rape-is-epidemic-in-japan.html

“Rape is an epidemic in Japan” by Gaijin Girl

Over the past couple weeks I have had more and more American tourists/mainland workers ask me about rape and other crimes in Okinawa caused by US military personnel. Japanese newspapers are notorious for giving misinformation about gaijin (foreigners). They give American military personnel an especially hard time because the Okinawan government does not want our bases to be here. Therefore they make a point of printing every little (or yes not so little) indiscretion done by an American when hundreds of crimes committed by Japanese Nationals largely go unwritten.

On the other hand there is a great source for reliable Japanese news in English at http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/ and to make people see the truth I did a simple news archive search using the term “rape” and came up with 239 listings that go back to 2000. Click on this post’s title to see the actual search results with links to the articles. Out of the 239 links I found about 35 that are US Military rape related, many are about the same rape like the gangbang in the late 90’s. Please take a minute and read through the following titles. Also keep in mind that I didn’t list links to the record number of 2,201 reported cases of women molested on Tokyo trains or links to the jp men who kill their wives and elderly mothers or the jp pedophiles, etc., etc.: (some are dupes for some reason)

Japan is full of a bunch of sick men. Many are mama’s boys who never learn how to interact with a real women so they wind up raping them. Their society of often violent manga and hentai teach young Japanese men how to interact with young girls inappropriately. Men can get away with murder on those trains and the cowardly police don’t do enough to protect these women. Many women are just as much to blame because they allow molestation to happen on crowded trains because they are too meek for confrontation. Japanese porn is largely rape and gang bangs.

Yes there is a large population of Americans in Japan, especially Okinawa. When Japanese people hear about a crime commited by an American they associate that crime with our entire society and think we all act in that manner yet the Japanese government turns a blind eye to their own problems because the gangs are more in charge of Japan than the government is, and also because they are too afraid of change. Maybe now is also a good time to mention that Japan is just the tiniest bit smaller, as far as land mass, than California. Chew on that for a while whydontcha.

    Rogergal:

Re: “the treaties it was obliged to sign”

    - That’s what it means to lose a war.

Re: “in order to maintain the integrity of the country.”

    - Right. The USSR declared war on Japan 1945-08-08, two days after Hiroshima, and therefore demanded all of Korea and half of Japan and the execution of the Emperor, since the USSR had been at war with Japan for one day. So yes, you are right, the American military occupation saved Japan as a nation.

There is no longer any occupation. There’s a S.O.F.A. The Japanese Diet can require their US allies to leave at any time. Obviously they have their own reasons not to do so. (Not least of which the increasingly belligerent Communist China and Kimilsungkimjongil-Country).

Just like the Philippines required that the US close Clark Airforce Base, which the US respectfully did so. Now Manila is desperate to have the US back as much as possible.

Same thing in BRD and ROK. ”
US get out! US get out!” blah blah blah. ANd then when someone like Rumsfeld suggests that BRD bases could be moved to hungary or Romania, or that US forces could withdraw from the DMZ to a base closer to Busan, all of a sudden it’s, “Oh, why is the US abandoning us!?!?!?!”

    My opinions:

    - The US should withdraw from Korea and let the Koreans go to hell and go back to their 1000-year long slavery under China

    - The US should cut it’s European forces in half (at least), and let the over-aged, anti-natalist, arrogant, pampered and pompous Euro-weenies see what reality looks like.

    - The US and Japan should strengthen their alliance. Japan should amend it’s constitution. The US should renegotiate it’s S.O.F.A. with Japan on a more equal basis, insisting that Japan be as committed to defending the US as the US is now committed to defending Japan.

    - The Japanese (and South Koreans and Taiwanese for that matter) should get their nuts and wombs in gear and stop being so hedonistic and spoiled and start cranking out kids before they end up with a median age of 40+ and find themselves impotent in world affairs and dependent upon a hostile Muslim (in Japan it’s mostly Iranians and Pakistanis) gastarbeiter & illegal alien workforce (just as Western Europe is now forced to deal with it’s own Jihadi masses as a result of decades of arrogance, blindness, delusion and willful impotence/infertility.

Dear Akira, it’s obvious that your knowlegde in politics and history is quite defficient. U.S are not paying for Japan defense. Furthermore,Japan is still paying for its defeat at WWII, thanks to the treaties it was obliged to sign in order to maintain the integrity of the country. In those treaties was established the inmediate disarment of Japan an the military ocupation of the U.S. (and evidently the “americanization” of Japan)

During the Cold War, Japan was one of the strategic points in the contention of the communism (both China and the URSS) in the “East Front”. This is the reason why the military bases in Japan have prevailed until nowadays.

In fact, there’s a serious dicussion inside the “Diet” (japanese parliament)about the necessity o not of this U.S. bases in Japan’s territory. In the other hand… it is obvious that U.S government is not willing to leave this strategic point (due the presence of China and North Korea)in their “Fight against the Terrorism”.

About the specific case mencioned in this post… all can I say is: leave the law leads to the truth.

Akira: I’m the sole owner of this blog, so I’ll try to answer you the best i can with the amount of time i have today. First of all, the point of the story is exactly what you read: news. I’m sure people (including you and me) can read fact, right ? Whether you or anyone else want to put politic into it, that’s your choice. I chose to post this because i’m interested in the repeated sexual offenses situation, and the guy’s funny name. I could not care any less whether the US military stays in Japan for 1 year, 10 yeas, or a million years to come. Try to read news with an open mind, and a light heart. Your life will be easier that way.

Also, if I want to post political stuffs, I will. The whole point of blogging is to express yourself, your view, your hobby, etc. isn’t it ?

    Việt,

I really appreciate all the great music and videos you make available here. Thanks a lot!

Would it be possible to post a collection of Vietnamese covers of English/American pop/rock songs?

What is the point of this story here? Do you think that your visitors can’t figure out how to get news from Japan?

For the ignoramuses and bigots who commented above, and for others reading, the story states:

“A U.S. serviceman has been arrested for the ALLEGED sexual assault of a Japanese woman.”

    ALLEGED.

Yes, even under Japanese law (under the liberal constitution enacted thanks to the US occupation forces, which also enfranchised Japanese women) criminal suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Furthermore, any sane and honest Japanese woman or foreign woman in Japan can tell you that Japanese trains, elevators, etc etc are just crawling with disgusting Japanese perverts — groping, grasping, raping, harassing, stealing underwear, taking “upskirt” photos and videos, putting cameras in toilets and changing rooms, kidnapping and murdering Japanese women. Is that not news?

Re: “Why do Japanese put up with US troops
    on their land?”

    - Because the US is paying for Japan’s defense, giving Japan the luxury of pretending that they don’t have an army, and providing Japan with it’s “nuclear umbrella.” And because every community close to a US base makes a massive profit out of having the US military there. The bottom line: Japan WANTS the US military there. Otherwise they’d be gone.

The commentators above who claim to be American seem to be unaware of (a) life, (b) society, (c) history, and (d) civil rights.

To the administrator(s) here: do you really want to open your website to political debate? Are you sure?

I completely agree with the above statements. I’m an American, but I would personally kick these guys asses (pardon my language), I think it’s completely terrible, and I believe it’s because they are American they think they can get away with it. That makes me angry though, such idiots. ~D

Dang, why can’t Americans just stop f’ing around and do their jobs?! I had friends in the US Army that used to tell me about the idiots in their units and how those guys would do stupid things while in Korea.

It’s very obvious that many young Americans do NOT understand and/or respect Asians and their cultures.

Not all Americans are bad people, but it only takes one to ruin the reputation for ev’one. I’m embarrassed to say I’m proud to be an American when my fellow countrymen our doing such shameful and disrespectful crap as this! >.<

Japan should boot US troops back to Amerika
or Iraq. Why do Japanese put up with US troops
    on their land?
