Korean female news anchor fired for giggling
Posted by Viet
I normally don’t post opinion about people from another country like this, but this is just ridiculous.
Context: At the end of the newscast, Moon Ji-ae, the news anchor for Korean TV station MBC, gave an update to the biggest news of the day, the tragic fire in Incheon that killed dozens of foreigners. Then, as usual, she said a farewell greeting to the audience, then bowed to the camera. During that though, for whatever reason, she started giggling. That angered some people, especially the Korean netizens, who pressured MBC to fire her, which they did.
My point to those Netizens: What ? That’s stupid ! I agree that her giggle was not appropriate, especially right after such a tragic news, but forced her out ? Even I myself as a foreigner think that’s way overboard. Do you know for sure why she giggled ? What’s if some idiots at the set did something that made her laughed ? What’s if she thought of doing something great after work with her friends (it’s the end anyways), and felt good about it ? Un-professional, yes, but not to the point of being fired! Make her give a public apology is good enough. Honestly, instead of sitting in front of a computer, get a life, try to find a job yourself (no, chatting and blogging ain’t job) before destroying other people’s livelihood ! Jeeze ! I would be afraid if I’m a public figure in Korea !

Re: “chatting and blogging ain’t a job”?
How dare you insult 99% of your readers!?
How about chatting and blogging and masturbating?
i wonder how much they pay these girls … better be a lot.
Again, this makes me wonder how cruel public criticism is in Korea. Look back some committed suicide cases of celebrities in Korea, I think you guys will surely understand.
um, ya i get what u’r saying. i’d be pissed too if it was me. but then i’m used to hearing about these kind of issues about how if u say/do one wrong thing on air, ur career is ruined, it’s harsh.
ummm: i’m that exactly “pissed”, but feel bad for the news anchor herself. It is hard to get a job these day, and a job as a new anchor is even much harder to come by, so i can feel her pain. Something’s with people these days that makes it enjoyable for them to destroy other people’s livelihood. Maybe their “un-tested” feeling of moral superiority ? The society is used to be much more tolerant than this, which makes our lives a lot easier.
i agree with Harvard above there! there’s no doubt about other factors that could have affected her. but,,, the thing is people did get killed, it’s a serious issue. and besides her profession partly depends on public opinions of her as well, if ppl dislike her then u can’t blame the dude who fired her or the ppl who hates her for giggling. netizens have the right to email and report about her behavior. –Harvard- ur example of 9/11 was perfect, after reading that i thought to myself, humm i would have called in or complained as well. // im pretty sure she’ll get another job n besides she made a lot of money as a news anchor so .. i don’t really feel bad for her. people lose their jobs for minor mistakes all the time so it’s a good lesson for her. don’t really feel bad for her. viet, u seem really pissed off over this.
Before I start, I want to apologize if some things in my post do not make sense, I’ve had only 3 years so far of English education.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Viet that it was totally unreasonable for such a strong public reaction to her light giggle. I do agree too that she was a bit unprofessional, I’m sure she was distracted by something in the background that made her giggle like so (maybe her boyfriend is the cameraman and he blew her a kiss as the news segment end? haha I don’t know), maybe it was someone falling over in a funny manner or made a funny face etc. The public’s inconsideration into the fact that outside factors may have played a role in her giggle really bothers me. And the fact that her career was ruin just makes me sad. She really didn’t deserve this; in Norway these kind of things happen quite often because our news system is so superb…. but usually a public apology is all that’s needed or some kind of statement from the station.
Although for example, if a reporter such as Brian Williams, would have giggled after closing statements about 9/11 on national TV in United States, the reaction by the US public I’m sure would be more or less the same. Sad fact on how quick 21st century citizens are to condemn these days.
