TONDABAYASHI, Osaka — An ailing 89-year-old woman died after 30 hospitals refused to accept her and she was forced to wait inside an ambulance for two hours in front of her home.
A family member called an ambulance saying the woman was vomiting and complaining of loss of appetite at around 4:49 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the Tondabayashi Fire Department. An ambulance arrived at her home in Tondabayashi eight minutes later and placed her inside. The elderly woman was conscious though paramedics gave her emergency oxygen.
However, when the paramedics and the fire headquarters’ control room asked 30 hospitals in Tondabayashi, Sakai, Osaka and other cities to accept her, all the hospitals declined saying their hospital beds were either full or all doctors on duty were busy with operations.
During that time, the ambulance had to wait near the woman’s home with the patient inside.
Finally, a hospital in Kawachinagano agreed to accept her, and the woman was taken to the hospital at 6:40 a.m. However, she had lost consciousness and died after arriving at the hospital.
